Geoffrey Gersten is a self-taught surrealist artist who is based out of Tempe, AZ. He started painting when he was 21 years old and paints his works using oil paints mixed with natural resin in the manner of the great Flemish master, Rogier van der Weyden.
Geoffrey explains his work by saying, “I am heavily influenced by the Dutch & Flemish Masters. I taught myself to paint by studying their work. I learned most from staring at the same paintings day after day. I collect art books avidly and never cease to become closer to the traditional techniques of oil painting perfected by the greatest names of art history. As a child, I was surrounded by Americana, (Warren Kimble, etc.) and as I grew into my own artistic style, the surrealists began to sway my subject preferences. These influences coupled with the modern emotionally-charged surfaces like those of Andrew Wyeth & Odd Nerdrum created an atmosphere for my own, unique artistic vision to flourish.”
