English born artist Ann Thornycroft is primarily known for her large ‘scale grid paintings that are covered with all-over patterns of arcs . The contrast of the rigid grid and the fluid arcs is further enhanced by sweeping washes of transparent paint that thinly veils , whisps and drips about the surface of the work.
Some viewers see these paintings as ‘windows of the mind” or inner landscapes; others view them as poetic notations of music made visible. Regardless of your perception, it’s clear that light, form color, space movement and order- formal elements- are at the core of Thornycroft’s aesthetic vision. Educated at the British art schools Central School of Art and Chelsea School of Art, in the 1960’s,Ann Thornycroft moved to New York City in 1969 and worked in several art related jobs while pursuing her painting and in 1972 she moved to Venice CA. Where she found her artistic home. She has lived in and around Venice ever since.
