About Jason

Jason Kronenwald was raised in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Currently, he lives in Toronto and makes portraits out of chewed bubblegum called Gum Blondes. The first Gum Blonde was completed in 1996.

Each Gum Blonde is 100% chewed bubblegum on a plywood backing. No paint or dye is used. The color is inherent to the gum’the mixing of color takes place inside the mouth during chewing using an endless variety of companies. Kronenwald has a dedicated team of chewers and prefers the texture of Trident. However, he does not chew gum himself unless he must.

"Back to "holland": I don't think I implied that I wanted the artist to change anything. A simple comment on the fact that he (oops on that one!) is not doing much of the work of finding subjects for his work (which is a large if not the largest part of a portrait), but rather taking subjects seen and captured by other artists, and sort of rearranging them... a pop-culture, information-age commentary I suppose, but not very interesting or honest to me. On the point of "wanting" something different - Why not find original, intriguing women on his own?"
