About Jason

Jason Kronenwald was raised in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Currently, he lives in Toronto and makes portraits out of chewed bubblegum called Gum Blondes. The first Gum Blonde was completed in 1996.

Each Gum Blonde is 100% chewed bubblegum on a plywood backing. No paint or dye is used. The color is inherent to the gum’the mixing of color takes place inside the mouth during chewing using an endless variety of companies. Kronenwald has a dedicated team of chewers and prefers the texture of Trident. However, he does not chew gum himself unless he must.

"Hi jasonI was thinking of your mom and decided to see if you were still doing your art. So interesting. How is your family? I think you have a daughter. How are Evan and your dad? I hope you are all well. Your mom and I shared a lot. I hope you remember me.Dianne Drywood, former Mohawk College teacher"

"SOOOOO cool got a art project and i researching this artist"

"Very Plain..But Then yu look at it and its a very nice Portrait!"

"While the medium used is interesting, I fail to find the creativity in this... It seems to me that the artist just copied famous photographs of famous people... You can find this kind of art on youtube all the time. I once found a guy who could make a picture of Elvis Presley out of Cheeto dust... And while that is amazing that he can do that, there is no creative thought process... Just skill..."

"what is the significance of using bubblegum?"

"Making art out of chewed gum shows a lot of ingenuity. The work is unoriginal pop art, yes, but done with a unique medium. Cool!"

"twiggy is always beautiful"

"I get giddy when I see art that makes people act out !and this is a classic example !it is one thing for someone to comment when they love a piece of art because they are driven by admiration !but when someone takes the time to right a comment that they dont like something it proves that the art is truly really thought provoking!you either love it or really hate it !kudos!to this artist !"

"I like the exposed patches of wood. It shows you what type of ground the artist used, and he uses the ground sort of like a media. It's amazing. I want one."

"Back to "holland": I don't think I implied that I wanted the artist to change anything. A simple comment on the fact that he (oops on that one!) is not doing much of the work of finding subjects for his work (which is a large if not the largest part of a portrait), but rather taking subjects seen and captured by other artists, and sort of rearranging them... a pop-culture, information-age commentary I suppose, but not very interesting or honest to me. On the point of "wanting" something different - Why not find original, intriguing women on his own?"
