About Claire

Claire Pope is an artist based in Springfield, KY.

Claire explains the work by saying, “My work explores the notion of ecstatic quietude and the emotion of wonderment found in nature during the Anthropocene Age of the post human. Through an ontological process of collecting, preserving, and making I strive to create ephemeral forms which communicate a sense of wonder and ethereality in hopes of finding a greater connection to the source of being. Throughout this process of collecting, I take note of my personal emotional response to the awe inspiring beauty and sublime experiences of the natural world. I observe intricacies of the microcosmic and macrocosmic aspects of nature such as varying patterns of veins within the flesh of a leaf or the stillness of a pine cone as it rests under a tree waiting to carry a seed to start new life. I then translate these observations into a form which conveys the emotion through shape, rhythm, variety, and pattern. Light and ethereality are also central to my creations. Works are often inspired by the site specific location of which I find objects. The use of man-made materials such as artificial light sources and silicone are also of great importance. I see my work as a personal reconciliation between the conflict of an industrial society evolving into a post human ideology and the sanctity of the natural environment.”

"All the objects take the form of an egg, or at least they are ovular like they are about to hatch. Is this a series that will continue through stages of life?"

"Love the work. explore swamp edge trees with holes at low levels in cold weather--never know who you may find. Creatures find them good resting spots on sunny days --they warm up nicely. Flash lite and you're in----"
