About Eliza

Over the last five years, I have been making portraits of people from different parts of the world, in contexts where they are at home, either literally or generally. I have photographed Cubans, Northern Californian architects and designers, ranchers in Southern California, Tanzanian subsistence farmers, Burundian refugees, my own family, and refugees who have been resettled to Phoenix, Arizona.

I want to foster greater compassion and understanding between people. I also want more people to have the experience I have had of seeing first hand what it looks like to live as a subsistence farmer in sub-Saharan Africa and what it looks like to live as a successful architect in Sausalito, California. Most people don’t get the opportunity to step outside of their class, their location and their cultural identity. I want to give people that experience. I think pictures have the power to move people’emotionally, intellectually, spiritually’and that’s what I am hoping to do.

"clean and clear, shows a number of opposites"

"I appreciate the photos submitted, as well as the statement you have written. I agree more peple should travel and become aware of other cultures around the world."

"So glad to congratulate Eliza at this successful time of her career. I like the fact her art is contemporary. Displaying a foto at a bustop. How clever. But get the art out of the museum and to the people. She has had some terrific commissions. If only she were a painter so many more would like her art. Photography doesn't have the same status as painting. People know painting is art--but photographs? Yes, and Eliza shows how a sucussful photographer works in the 21st century. She is a model for artists who dare to be fine art photographers."

"Beautiful photographs of the Tanzanian people. I love to view well taken photographs of people and places unfamiliar to me, or maybe it is because they're not."

"Grace, dignity, balance of color & comp. I too would like to see many more of these. Structurally & emotionally right on target."

"Wonderful contrast between these two excellent images. The textures and patterns in both are beautiful. Makes me want to see more by this artist."
