About James

My current body of work explores the link between matter and energy, a fusion of subjective and objective reality, and the effect our perception has on the world around us. My works are non-objective, functioning as a conduit between the observer and the environment, to facilitate communication. By using simple, elegant forms and light I seek to create a balance between a ritualistic artistic process and the natural phenomena around me – a balance that has the potential to influence the experience of the viewer or participant, as they allow themselves to enter their own state of balance with the world around them. The forms I create are simple, elegant – without baggage. They enable the viewer to experience the work in a state of nameless non-objectification, if only for the briefest of moments. This primal interaction empowers one to transcend language and embrace the potential to remove all boundaries between self, subject, matter, energy, light, time, and information… To see a little more today than they did yesterday.

While being energy efficient and environmentally sensitive my works with their temporal, ephemeral nature strive to remind us of the same traits that our world subtly communicates to us, through the changing of the seasons, through the shifts in climate and topography, that our world exists in time more than space, that like my work, it can live on through documentation; a memory of an event, a record of a happening, something that, even if repeated, will never be the same.

@ Matt: the Arc piece was acutally a large scale installation that was left in the salt lake for a month while the space transformed itself to incorporate the 100m long rope light (that was initally dug into a arc shaped channel - a whole day's work in over 40C heat)... Not a long exposure light painting at all.

These little mini biographies are such meaningless drivel. "My current body of work explores the link between matter and energy, a fusion of subjective and objective reality, and the effect our perception has on the world around us." What BS. Just say what you mean. "I took a long exposure photo of a lake while I walked up the shoreline with a flashlight. I thought it looked cool." It does look cool. But it doesn't "empower one to transcend language and embrace the potential to remove all boundaries between self, subject, matter, energy, light, time, and information…" Whatever the hell that means.
