In March of 1980, with the cooperation of the Kenya Government and its elephant immobilization unit, Mihail cast a live, wild bull elephant in seventy two minutes. Afterward the elephant rose and walked away unharmed. From the cast he created an over life-size bronze sculpture which was inaugurated on November 18, 1998, by the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and installed at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as a gift from Kenya, Namibia and Nepal. Cast the Sleeping Elephant Trust continues to operate out of its New York office and remains committed to reconciling man with nature and safeguarding natural habitats.
