Nick Patten was born in 1953 in Troy, New York. He received a BFA from College of Saint Rose, Albany in 1977.
Settling on a composition for one of his room interior paintings is a progressive process. Using an array of photographs for reference, he starts by isolating what he finds the most interesting and necessary elements. Then he combines these in a compositional sketch, often adding additional features from his imagination.
Close attention to brushstroke helps him to achieve the primary focus on light and dark in all his paintings. By working from photographs with the aim of creating credible images, Patten strives to play up the theatrical in everyday scenes. Content is more important to him than form and indeed reflecting any of the strictly photographic qualities of his reference material.
His work has been exhibited across the east of the United States, and collected nationwide and internationally.
