About Rena

Rena Littleson, in her series of self-portraits, explores the loss of identity it through self-censorship and commodification.

Littleson has lately grappled to understand human nature and unfulfilled urges, further distorted by dictates of conscience and institution. ‘A battle is played out between who we think we are, who we would like to be, and who we think others want us to be,’ she says.

Her work has been exhibited across the East Coast and she was the recipient of a 2010 Camberwell Rotary Art Show prize.

had i not read the artist's profile stating her loss of identity, it would not have even occurred to me that such element bears some significance in her portraits.
who by the way wrote the profile? the artist or someone else?
god knows how conflicting the descriptions can be?
back to the drawings.
does the lack of color, indeed, reveals the vacuity often associated with a vague sense of identity?or is it not?

"Entwined" looks like how i feel most days. Very accurate.

Obviously a talented artist but the subject matter is tired. If I was a 14 I would think it was great. Beyond that it is just another drawing. Much better work in the painting section of her website.

Duality.I find this disturbing but true. It conveys to me the conflicting emotions maybe experienced by a functioning drug user or alcoholic. Seemingly serene and in control but in reality seething and self destructive.

I can't think of any place in my house that I could put this. Yes you can draw. But, it looks unfinished. Just sayin.

Brilliant, very detailed work, A fresh talent with interesting concepts and content. Very broad in the style(s) as well. Loved it!

No question about it...these are great! I love them and can totally relate to the first one. When I first saw it I had this overwhelming feeling that this is me. I think we all feel like this from time to time and I suppose that is why this drawing touches me so. I love your work Rena! Keep up the brilliant work! I think you captured being human in your work in a way that I can not find the right words to express except I love them!

I think her art is wonderful. It depicts the face we put on every day but the melt down we can have inside ourselves no one else sees.

I think the second drawing is her looking at her reflection . Both drawings caught my attention and really got me thinking .
